Can Dependence on 170.000 Tonnes of Imported Fishmeal Per Year Be Reduced?
A study published in Animals on 24 March 2026 shows that practical diets formulated with insect meal, microalgae, microbial proteins, yeast, selected plant proteins and aquaculture by-products can deliver growth performance in rainbow trout comparable to that achieved with conventional fishmeal-based diets.
During the 97-day trial, the fish grew from approximately 63 grams to between 335 and 353 grams. The feed conversion ratio was around 0,78, while mortality remained negligible.
No deterioration was observed in fillet quality in terms of moisture, protein and fat composition or texture.
These findings demonstrate that, with the right combination of raw materials and a well-balanced nutritional profile, commercially viable practical diets can be developed to partially replace fishmeal.
The future of aquafeed will therefore be shaped by balanced, science-based and cost-effective formulations that combine fishmeal with insect protein, algae, aquaculture by-products and functional ingredients.
